A hands-on Nature Journaling & Drawing Workshop with a quick intro to free and low-cost apps that can help you deepen your connection to nature—from identifying plants to tracking your adventures.
This two-hour workshop, lead by Terri Mando, is an introduction to Nature Journaling: how to get started, supplies, where to observe, groups to participate with, and other resources to learn more. Nature journaling is a quiet practice of observing nature - relaxing and meditative - training you to be grounded in the moment and build inner calm - a form of mental preparedness in the face of the threat of increased environmental uncertainties and disasters. It can help you pay attention more closely, to focus on details, and to be a better listener. During the workshop, you'll explore ways to record nature observations and experiment with drawing techniques that emphasize looking closely. We'll explore Betty Edwards' 5 basic component skills of drawing from her book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
After the workshop, we’ll also learn about the ways you can use technology that’s already in your hand - your smartphone - to better connect with the world around you, exploring free or low-cost apps like AllTrails, iNaturalist, and Merlin Bird ID. Come one intrepid adventurer, come all!
